Saliva Testing for Dry Mouth

Saliva production naturally slows down as we sleep, and as we get older. This can result in a condition known as Dry Mouth.

Dry Mouth is also a common side effect of many prescription drugs. More than 650 drugs cause Dry Mouth, resulting in tooth decay and/or gum and mouth diseases.

To help your mouth stay clean and protect against infection and bad breath, dentists and dental hygienists can monitor the amount of saliva you produce if you are taking medication, and make recommendations to prevent Dry Mouth. Queen Street Dental also offers treatment for Dry Mouth.

How does Dry Mouth affect dental health?

Saliva protects the enamel from demineralisation. You may experience tooth sensitivity or notice white or brownish marks on your teeth. This can be demineralisation, and people with Dry Mouth are more susceptible to this. It is important to have regular examinations and oral hygiene visits with your dental hygienist, who can diagnose demineralisation before it becomes decay. Once the problem has been recognised, an appropriate prevention and remineralisation program to rebalance the oral environment can be implemented.

GC Saliva Testing

Saliva Testing is designed to test the saliva at both resting and stimulated states, as the characteristics of these forms of saliva are different. The GC Saliva Testing Kit has proved to be an effective tool in assisting with early detection of the condition of the oral environment.
